Working with SAS, the world's leading data analytics company, we built The Batting Lab—an A.I. powered batting cage to teach kids how to use data through a game they love to play by tracking their stance, swing, ball-flight statistics and more. Because the program was only made for a select few, we extended the program online in the form of a free educational tool for parents and guardians.
Below is an overview of the Data Playbook. For a full experience, give the playbook a swing by clicking here.
Role: Art Direction and Design
User-Friendly Design
We took inspiration from traditional baseball cards to create an kid-friendly digital experience that taught them how to improve their swing and read data without feeling like homework.
Data-Focused Content
Aimed to replicate the cage experience, the Data Playbook is broken up into the six different swing segments. Each section includes statistics that were gathered to inform the cage measurements, coaching that identifies factors that will improve that segment of the players' swing, drills to apply that data, and instruction on how to track improvement over time.
At-Home Drills
The Data Playbook also included drills that guided the children on how to improve each swing segment based on the data that was collected from the Elite Players.
Each drill included easy to follow step-by-step instruction they could practice on their own.
Worksheets
To ensure the children also improved on their understanding of data, the Playbook also included worksheets the users were able to download and fill out to track their progress. By being able to record and interpret their own stats over time, they were practicing data literacy.
The Data Playbook is an extension of The Batting Lab, which garnered press from
The Today Show, Muse by Clio, Adweek Ad of the Day, Shots Ad of the Day, and LBB Online,
as well as recognition by Cannes, Clios, ADC, Webby's, Effie's, and the Shorty's.
